2Futures Ltd: 2016-2017

2Futures is a real estate development company, based in Grand Baie Mauritius, which has undertaken a number of residential and commercial developments. Founded in 2007, it has rapidly grown to earn itself the reputation for being a trendsetter in quality construction and visionary architecture. Its originality and attention to detail has yield over US300 million dollars in sales over the past 5 years.

I first came to know about 2Futures when they started the project “Le Park de Mont Choisy” which is close to where I live. It was a convenient site for me and I applied to work there as a trainee quantity surveyor to complete my remaining 320 hours of practical training. This company has truly amazed me. The sense of belonging I felt, the working environment it created, the staff members were all exceptional. Ashley Jahier, who works in the Administration and Legal department of the company, gave me a warm welcome. She introduced me to everyone and explained to me the structure of the company. Among the staffs were Talha Manjoo, the company’s quantity surveyor and Junaid Salehmohamed, the company’s executive director and project manager. While speaking with Junaid, I came to know he was a former UCT student who graduated in 2018 in Quantity surveying.

Talha would be my supervisor for the rest of my stay in the company. He taught me how to use DimensionX which I would use for my cost engineering project later and showed me how to prepare provisional sums. He was a calm and kind person who would teach me something new everyday. He would give me a new task everyday and I always tried my best to do everything correctly. During my stay I was able to work on 3 IRS projects namely Le Barachois, Manta Cove and Le parc de Mont-Choisy. They all included the building of villas and bungalows and my job was to measure the components of the elements to help prepare the Bill of Quantities for each project. Talha would do the measurements beforehand and would crosscheck his values with mine. I’m proud to say that most of them tallied.  At one point I also had to go to a notary’s office to take information from clients’ title deeds. It was the first time I saw an IRS title deed, something which I will always be thankful for.

At the end of my practical training, I was given my testimonial letter and loads of good wishes. I felt sad to leave such an appealing company but I learnt a lot.  Talha taught me things that I would only have learnt on the workplace. I realized how important it was to have a healthy work environment. Everyone always felt appreciated and this may be the reason why they were always ready to do more.
